Welcome to the ELA Homepage

WELCOME

This page highlights the department-wide expectations and resources, which are aligned to the California State Standards for all English Language Arts (ELA) classes at Toll.

STANDARDS & ASSESSMENTS

We encourage all stakeholders to read and review the resources about standards from the California Department of Education.  Standards are available at this link: https://www.cde.ca.gov/

Information about the California Assessment for Student Progress and Performance (CAASPP) is available at http://www.caaspp.org

TOLL ENGLISH POLICIES

Please read, review, and regularly reference the Toll Middle School Titan Handbook.  Parents should check their children's Google Classrooms and check that their assignments are being completed before being turned in. The Titan Handbook details all school policies including attendance, dress code, and behavior expectations.

Specifically, all student work in English should contain a proper MLA Heading (i.e., Student's Full Name, Teacher's Last Name, Subject/Period, and Date in MLA format).

Example:

Tina Titan

Mr. Twain

English Period 1

02 March 2020

College & Career Readiness (CCR)

The following document explains the life-long skills students will develop as a result of gaining proficiency of the California State Standards. It details how these skills apply to college and career readiness and make them more prepared citizens of the 21st Century.  It is excellent reading for parents and other community stakeholders.

In-Text Citation

Learning and improving academic integrity is important for students.  This primarily comes in the form of using data and information in responsible ways.  The main demonstration of this skill is by citing sources within their own writing. Whether you are paraphrasing or directly quoting sources, this handout demonstrates HOW this is done within Modern Language Association (MLA) Guidelines.

Cross Curricular Writing Rubric

The following rubric is a new tool for students.  It describes the criteria and characteristics of various types of writing.  It should be used by students to review and improve their work.  Though developed by English teachers in the GUSD, it can be used for all types of writing students encounter across the curriculum.
